The Running Maori Doctor sets world-record 8 stage races on 8 continents in a year

Maori Ultra Running Doctor sets astonishing new world record

In the world of extreme endurance sports, few feats are as ambitious as attempting to complete multiple multi-day stage races on every continent. But that’s exactly what Inia Raumati, a recreational ultra-runner from New Zealand, has achieved in 2024.

In December, the emergency doctor from Auckland set a new world record in Antarctica, completing 8 self-supported multi-day stage ultramarathons on every continent — in one year.

This required a relentless approach to training, fuelling, recovering, and performing.

That’s where CurraNZ came in.

Reflecting on the record, Dr Inia Raumati says,"The hardest part of eight self-supported multi-day races in a year is the cumulative fatigue and recovery. I found that CurraNZ not only improved my recovery between races but decreased my fatigue during the events themselves. I found that would consistently improve in the race standings as the days progressed, despite sometimes only having completed a race a week or two earlier."
This observation was highlighted in his superb race results, too. "Despite the race load and having never previously podiumed in an ultra before (and turning 50!), this year, I managed to place in four out of eight races, with a second place (male) in Antarctica - my final race - to the surprise of the race organizers."

Inia has 'form' when it comes to ultra records - he became the first and only Kiwi to complete the 4Deserts Grand Slam in 2014, when turning 40, running 250km races across the Sahara, Gobi, Atacama, and Antarctica Deserts in a year.

Ini 2024, for his 50th, he achieved a second '4Deserts Grand Slam', with the new multi-stage self supported ultramarathon record the major goal.

As you would expect, the year-long 'acid test' subjected Inia to the gamut of physical conditions and issues that ultra-runners are susceptible to. To his surprise, he found CurraNZ came to his rescue.
"An unexpected yet welcome side effect was the improvement in my sleep, my notorious runner's gut and recovery from air travel.

"I would take 1-2 tablets daily between races to load or recover, then 3 tabs, 2 hours before the start of each days racing, followed by 2 tabs every 5 hours and 2 at night.
"As a doctor I have and continue to recommend CurraNZ to all my friends and fellow runners as a safe alternative to commonly used analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications."

Inia has been raising funds for a scholarship called Kia Mau, Kia Ora; to enable young people to run a multi-stage ultra in a team and support them to embrace their full potential.

He says, "We want to nurture young people, who otherwise would not have the opportunity to take on a life-changing challenge, to break through their perceived barriers to success and support them with help from the community through financial aid and mentorship into their chosen careers."

Congratulations Inia - CurraNZ has been incredibly proud to be a part of your amazing journey. We're sure future scholarship recipients of Kia Mau Kia Ora will no doubt use your inspiring example as a way to find the strength and determination to accomplish great things.
