Maori Ultra Running Doctor sets astonishing new world record
In the world of extreme endurance sports, few feats are as ambitious as attempting to complete multiple multi-day stage races on every continent. But that’s exactly what Inia Raumati, a recreational ultra-runner from New Zealand, has achieved in 2024.
In December, the emergency doctor from Auckland set a new world record in Antarctica, completing 8 self-supported multi-day stage ultramarathons on every continent — in one year.
This required a relentless approach to training, fuelling, recovering, and performing.
That’s where CurraNZ came in.
Inia has 'form' when it comes to ultra records - he became the first and only Kiwi to complete the 4Deserts Grand Slam in 2014, when turning 40, running 250km races across the Sahara, Gobi, Atacama, and Antarctica Deserts in a year.
Ini 2024, for his 50th, he achieved a second '4Deserts Grand Slam', with the new multi-stage self supported ultramarathon record the major goal.
Inia has been raising funds for a scholarship called Kia Mau, Kia Ora; to enable young people to run a multi-stage ultra in a team and support them to embrace their full potential.
He says, "We want to nurture young people, who otherwise would not have the opportunity to take on a life-changing challenge, to break through their perceived barriers to success and support them with help from the community through financial aid and mentorship into their chosen careers."
Congratulations Inia - CurraNZ has been incredibly proud to be a part of your amazing journey. We're sure future scholarship recipients of Kia Mau Kia Ora will no doubt use your inspiring example as a way to find the strength and determination to accomplish great things.
